Samuel Buraimoh completed the Certified Trade Finance Professional (CTFP) programme to close the gap between hands-on trade finance execution and the kind of globally standardised, strategic expertise needed to influence decisions at a higher level – across regulators, correspondent banks, technology vendors, and clients alike.

In his responses, he reflects on how the certification sharpened his command of ICC rules and international best practice, reduced operational friction in real transactions, and lent credibility to his contributions in the design of Kachasi – Nigeria’s first indigenous trade finance solution.

I am a Trade Finance Consultant at Union Systems Limited, based in Nigeria.

My motivation was driven by a clear gap I encountered between hands-on trade finance execution and globally standardised best practice. In my role, I frequently interfaced with relationship managers, regulators, correspondent banks, technology vendors, and clients. I noticed that trade finance decisions were often slowed or weakened because stakeholders operated with different interpretations of trade instruments, risk allocation, and compliance obligations.

I needed a globally recognised framework and language to confidently align discussions, challenge assumptions, and influence decisions at a strategic level.

The CTFP significantly sharpened my interpretation of UCP 600, ISBP, and AML requirements. In practice, this led to fewer document discrepancies, reduced rejections by correspondent banks, and faster settlements. By tightening document review standards and educating colleagues on common ISBP pitfalls, we reduced repeat discrepancies on export and import transactions – improving customer satisfaction and reducing operational risk.

The certification added direct credibility to my contributions in the design and development of Kachasi, Nigeria’s first indigenous trade finance solution. Stakeholders were more receptive to my recommendations on embedding compliance checks, risk controls, and standardised workflows into the system because my views were clearly anchored in international trade finance standards.
