Suleiman Marai completed the Certified Trade Finance Professional (CTFP) programme not out of immediate necessity, but out of deliberate ambition – a drive to deepen his technical grounding in trade finance, particularly in buyer and supplier finance, and to grow into a more capable and credible professional.

What is your role and who do you work for?
I am a Trade Finance Analyst at Absa Bank Kenya PLC, based in Kenya.
What was your motivation for enrolling on the Certified Trade Finance Professional (CTFP) certification? What problems or obstacles did you face that you needed the CTFP certification to help with?
My motivation was a desire to deepen my knowledge of trade finance, with a particular focus on buyer and supplier finance. I was not facing a specific challenge that required immediate resolution – rather, I recognised the value of strengthening my technical understanding proactively.
I aimed not only to broaden my skill set but also to position myself as a more knowledgeable and reliable resource within the trade finance space, and to bring greater value to my client engagements.
What has been the biggest benefit so far of completing the CTFP?
Earning the CTFP has significantly strengthened my confidence during client engagements.
The advanced knowledge and practical insights I gained have enabled me to communicate more effectively, address client needs with greater clarity, and contribute meaningfully to discussions on trade finance solutions.
This has not only increased the value I bring to my employer but has also improved the quality of support I provide to customers – elevating my professional capability and reinforcing my credibility in the field.
How has your CTFP certification been received locally by your employer, colleagues, and customers in your country and/or region?
The CTFP is widely recognised as a benchmark of excellence in the trade finance profession and earning it has brought considerable respect from colleagues. That recognition affirms my commitment to professional growth and strengthens my standing within the organisation.
