Course curriculum

Lessons

Lesson 1: Introduction

In this lesson, we will cover a contextual overview of international trade, including a treatment of the risks related to the conduct of business across borders, as well as an introduction to some of the institutions that support and enable international commerce.

 

Lesson 2: Market Selection and Development

In this lesson, we will look at trade from the perspective of market selection and market entry options and strategies. We will highlight key dynamics in the market today, and look at specific entry strategies, including engagement through global supply chains.

 

Lesson 3: PESTE Analysis

In this lesson, we will take a look at the important dimensions covered by a PESTE analysis (Political, Economic, Social, Technological and Environmental) and their impacts.

 

Lesson 4: Linking Trade, Banking, and Finance

The focus of this section is to demonstrate that financing is a critical enabler of international commerce, and that there are clear linkages between trade activity and financing needs, options and opportunities.

 

Lesson 5: Legal Overview

In this lesson, we will introduce the reality that international commerce involves dealing with legal traditions and practices that can differ significantly across jurisdictions and markets. Equally importantly, there is a context of international law that applies at a supra-national level, and contracting as well as dispute resolution must also account for these elements.

 

Lesson 6: Evolutions in Global Trade

In this lesson, we take a forward-looking perspective, outlining new developments in technology, business models and practices impacting the ways global trade is conducted.

 

Lesson 7: Assessment

This section will test your knowledge on what you have learned so far and aims to equip you with the skills and context you will need in the field. Please note, this is not an exam.

Do I get a certificate?

This course forms part of the curriculum for the Global Trade Certificate (GTC) but can also be purchased on its own.

If you just complete this course then you will earn a Letter of Completion once you finish (please note there is no exam for this individual course).

However, this course can also be put towards achieving the GTC qualification. More details can be found here.

If you complete the GTC then you will earn a Certificate of Achievement, signed by the ICC Secretary General, once you pass the final exam.

Are there any prerequisites for taking this course?

A strong interest in trade and trade finance is recommended and all candidates need to be able to read and write in English.
