Finding work as a new graduate during COVID-19 was challenging.  In this alumni interview, we speak with Christina Cuthbertson, Container Logistics Coordinator for Pacific Coast Fruit Products Ltd about how she took a job in logistics and supply chain management as a stop-gap – after initially looking for a role in HR – and ended up enjoying it so much she never left.

Christina shares her journey into logistics and supply chain management – a field she entered unexpectedly but quickly grew passionate about. From tackling complex global trade regulations to earning the Incoterms® 2020 Certificate, she discusses the skills, insights, and continuous learning that have shaped her early career experiences.

Career beginnings and background

I currently work as a Container Logistics Coordinator for a fruit processing company called Pacific Coast Fruit Products. In this role, I manage the end-to-end process of international containerised ocean and air freight. This includes warehouse coordination, rate negotiations, transportation arrangements, documentation, and clearing customs. I also track costs for each order to support accurate invoicing.

Truth be told, I got into the logistics and supply chain management industry by accident. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in April 2020, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, when job opportunities were scarce. My focus was on human resource management at the time, but finding a role in that field proved challenging.

When a colleague approached me about interviewing for a logistics position, I had no idea what logistics even entailed – I had to look it up before the interview!

The complexity of the field felt overwhelming, but I went ahead with the interview, mainly for the experience. To my surprise, I got the job. I initially saw it as a stepping stone, a way to gain work experience before transitioning into something more aligned with my studies.

However, as I immersed myself in the role, I developed an appreciation for the fast-paced and dynamic nature of logistics. Every day presents unique challenges and problem-solving has become one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.

It keeps me constantly engaged and I’ve found a passion for it.

Building skills and adapting to a new industry

Since I stumbled upon logistics unexpectedly, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect at first.

As I started gaining hands-on experience, one of the biggest challenges was understanding the complex regulations involved in moving goods across borders. Compliance is a priority in this industry and there was a steep learning curve in familiarising myself with international shipping rules, including the Incoterms® rules.

Without prior experience, this could have been a significant hurdle, but I was fortunate to be part of an incredible team with strong leadership. The guidance of a knowledgeable leader has made all the difference as I navigated this new career path.

The willingness to learn is a big one. In logistics, no two shipments are ever the same – each one presents new challenges, considerations, and evolving regulations to navigate. Keeping an open mind, approaching situations from multiple angles, and asking the right questions to find creative solutions are essential skills in this industry.

Another key skill is organisation with flexibility.

I’ve always been detail-oriented and love having a well-structured plan…

…but I quickly learned that in logistics, there’s no such thing as a ‘bulletproof’ plan. With so many moving parts, last-minute changes are inevitable… It’s all about hoping for the best while preparing for the worst.

Success in this field requires the ability to pivot quickly, make informed decisions under pressure, and adapt to unexpected challenges.

That’s where continuous learning plays an important role. The Incoterms® 2020 Certificate provided the knowledge and tools necessary to anticipate potential issues, mitigate risks, and make well-informed decisions in real time.

Upskilling in a new field

I’m fortunate to work for a company that values professional development and invests in its employees. Since I had no prior experience when I joined the industry four years ago, having that support has been invaluable.

As I became more familiar with international trade operations, I saw opportunities to improve how our company utilised the Incoterms® rules in our transactions. I wanted to strengthen my understanding to help us navigate these terms more effectively and who better to go to than straight to the source – the organisation that created these rules, the ICC.

A clear understanding of the division of cost, risk, and responsibility is essential for any company involved in international trade. When dealing with ocean containers carrying cargo worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, it’s critical to know exactly what your company is agreeing to in each transaction. Familiarising yourself with the Incoterms® rules and their guidelines helps facilitate smoother operations.

Earning the certification provided me with a strong foundation of knowledge and confidence.

It gave me the tools to collaborate effectively with our sales and purchasing teams, ensuring we select the most suitable Incoterms® rule for each transaction.

Additionally, it has helped me reinforce compliance and ensure that our company is meeting its obligations in every deal.

That’s a tough question. When I started in logistics, the industry was facing unprecedented supply chain disruptions due to the pandemic. I had no choice but to hit the ground running, and the steep learning curve accelerated my career. Since then, I’ve embraced every challenge as an opportunity to expand my knowledge and grow within the field.

Right now, my focus is on professional development – deepening my understanding of the many interconnected components of supply chain management. I see this as a career-long commitment, as the industry continues to evolve.

Looking ahead, my long-term goal is to step into a leadership role where I can foster a positive learning environment, take on more complex projects, and drive efficiency within supply chain operations. I hope to grow alongside the company, contributing to its success while continuing to develop my own expertise.
